[RDD] Mysql problem

Greetings,

I have need of a couple of simple rivendell workstations and dont have 
the budget to buy new pc's so I have a couple of older 586's that run 
slackware and vectorlinux just dandy, they only have 527mb of ram and 
suse runs very very slow. So I compiled rivendell on them with slack and
everything went smoothly, however I can't get passed one error when 
running any rd app.

I see the database in rdadmin.
When I run rdlogin it says Current user is unknown
and I can't change that.
Rdlibrary shows no carts or groups
rd.conf looks fine.
/var/snd is mounted from nfs and writable

I can connect to the Rivendell database on my server just fine from the 
command line.

Have I missed something in the install?
or is this a mysql problem?

slackware 12.1
mysql 5.0.51b
