SOLVED!

/etc/hosts needed 127.0.0.2 added as localhost
plus slack had added a domain to actual ip address in /etc/hosts equal 
to the samba workgroup name.

Added the first, removed the second, all is well.

I Really appreciate the response and help.

Perhaps if I were pontificating about using Rivendell on Mars there 
would have been some interest. :)
