In fact, it was something else. For the benefit of the archive [1]:
As Mark Carey points out, the 'missing' doc directory mentioned in
the app notes is in fact in /usr/share/doc/pacakages/rivendell.

I used the 'complete' sample rd.conf file - apparently the problem
was something to do with MySQL user info, not the [Identity] section.
Setting the [MySQL] options to something I knew would work with my
DB server made the problem go away.
Now all I need to do is make actual noise come out of the app through
ALSA/JACK :-)
[btw: does the currently-available package - 0.8.4 - contain that code?]

[1] Fred et al - if you have a mbox-format archive of the lists anywhere,
I'm prepared to set up a self-updating web archive here via a hidden
Mailman gateway. I'm sure there's a value in a complete archive...
