At this point ALSA is dead in Rivendell.  Fred is using JACK instead of ALSA
to support the plain old soundcards.  He seems to have started the
implementation of JACK in the code, but I don't think it is ready to go
quite yet.

So to answer your question about ASI cards, yes, you do need an ASI card at
this time to be able run Rivendell.
