Ohh good, I am not the only one who cannot find any decent documentation!

To my mind, if you can live with a single rate system you are far better off 
writing for jackd (which not only has a wonderfully easy api, it completely 
manages to hide the existance of ALSA). 

OSS was easy (but somewhat limited), ALSA is IMHO a pig (but probably mostly 
due to the variety of soundcard hardware out there), a better job could have 
been done of the library to present a more unified interface to client 
applications. We should not have to care about the difference between 24 bit 
and 24 bit packed in 32 bit samples!

Sorry, just trying to debug something that gets very much too intimate with 
alsa-lib, had to vent!
