The day the roof came off

Posted in thoughts at 6:14 pm by Melissa

So now that we’ve had a couple days to calm down from our adventures in the emergency room I’m ready to get back to blogging about our house.

It has been two weeks now since we had a crew of friends and family come over to help us take the roof off the house.  We love you guys!!!  It is amazing to see how well and how quickly things can happen when people work together.  There is a reason God gave us families and church families!

The first step was taking off all the old shingles.

I even had lots of help getting the food ready for lunch and the table set up.

Then the boards under the shingles were removed.

The kids loved playing in the back yard and got lots of attention!  They spent a lot of time on the swings which was a good place to keep them out of trouble.

Josiah and Linaya LOVED spending the day with Grandma!

Lunch went well with hamburgers in the back yard and a chance for everyone to take a break and have a visit.

Xavier is so big now!  He knows lots of tricks and only needed to be rescued a couple times.

Fujian taking it easy after lunch.

The house looked very strange with no roof.  I’m sure the neighbours were really starting to wonder about us.  I offered one guy a lawn chair because he stood out and watched so long!

Patience is just cute so here is a pic of her that day.  I know some of you only read my blog for the baby pics so here you go :)

Harold is the brains behind this operation and Robert has loved working with his Dad!  He has so many great ideas, organizes a crowd well, and showed up everyone with how much work he has done this month.  I get tired just watching him!  Thanks so much to all our parents for being so helpful and supportive through all this!

Just to clarify, my Dad was not the one who put the hole into my kitchen ceiling, but he did look rather guilty sitting there with his hammer!  This is one of my favorite pictures!

The back yard.

He’s just cute too!

Here is a pic of the first floor truss being lifted onto the roof.

The floor trusses in place.

It was such a long day that Josiah fell asleep in the swing outside.  This worked well until the rain started, but by then they were done for the night on the roof and he got to go to bed.  We were able to get the trusses in place and part of the floor sheeted before the rain came and we tarped and called it a night.

Josiah update

Posted in thoughts at 1:02 pm by Melissa

So we managed to have an uneventful evening last night, a good sleep, and we went out to Warman to enjoy the parade this morning.  Josiah is still acting tired but is much more like himself.  He doesn’t have a fever at all today so I’m hoping that it is all behind us.  I’ll be a little nervous next time he gets sick, but for today I’m just enjoying how good he looks.  Thanks to everyone for your prayers.

Josiah

This last two weeks has been extremely busy for us with taking off the roof, putting up walls upstairs, putting together the new roof and shingling. I have lots of pictures to post, but haven’t had time to do that. On Wed after work it was raining, the shingles were finally finished so we went out for supper to celebrate! After supper we came back home to have a relaxing evening sitting on the couch. Josiah was running around the house, singing action songs with us, and acting a bit tired but like his normal self. He crawled up beside me on the couch and I just started to read a book when I felt him move. He was having a seizure.

I have seen seizures before at camp and at work, but nothing prepares you for your baby having one especially when it is so unexpected. I held him while Robert called the ambulance and he stopped seizuring right before they got here (less than 10 minutes). They checked him out and were reassuring as they drove us to the hospital. Apparently Josiah had a febrile (fever) seizure. We learned from the pediatrician and a handout she gave us that this is quite common. About 5% of kids will do this in response to a fever that comes on quickly. He didn’t have a fever earlier in the day, had a slight fever when they checked in the ambulance, and it was even higher when we got to the hospital.

I’m typing all this so I don’t have to explain it all 400 times and I know you guys are interested. A few more things we learned about febrile seizures is that 2/3 of kids only ever have one, it does not lead to epilepsy, it does not cause any brain damage or permanent problems at all, and they can not be prevented by taking tylenol or advil. It is also a good sign that his whole body was seizing because if it was caused by something in his brain the pediatrician said only one arm or one side of his body would be affected. Overall he had the best type of seizure with the best prognosis. His vitals and exam were all good.
I only slept 2 or 3 hours Wed night because I was listening so closely to the baby monitor. I just about had myself calmed down last evening even though he was still feverish and feeling rotten all day yesterday. He was very tired in the evening and we were hanging out at Diane’s house. Just when I was thinking I should take him home to bed he had another seizure. This time only 2 minutes long, but still very scary. Diane drove us to the hospital and Robert met us there.

Last night they checked his urine and blood and swabbed his nose. The conclusion from the blood work was that he has some type of viral infection (not treatable with antibiotics) and not bacterial or meningitis or anything like that. We had the same very nice pediatrician who said that it was another febrile seizure, he is no more likely to have another just because he had two, and because the infection is viral we just have to wait for it to run its course. We got home about 11:30 and slept a little better.

Today Josiah isn’t as feverish and he is more active. We went for lunch with Monica and Linaya and he ate LOTS! He walked the length of the mall by himself and said “hi” to every stranger he met. I’m feeling a lot better today because he seems more like himself. Please pray that we are done this little adventure and that he doesn’t have any more seizures.
