Last night we went over to visit Rob, Diane, Xavier, and Niles. The boys love their little cousin. Niles likes to be a big cousin, but Xavier has decided that he just wants to be a medium cousin. I guess that works too!
Xavier was great at holding Josiah all by himself as long as we were in the room.

Niles was so excited and easily distracted that we stayed quite close. He loves babies!

My friend Jenn from work brought her baby Jessie over to visit this morning. Jessie looked quite confused by the very noisy doll! He was very loud while they were here.

It is so hard to believe that this baby that we just brought home is four weeks old already! He was being way too cute yesterday so I had to take pictures. The red on his cheeks is from the tape that keeps his nasal prongs in.

So far he likes tummy time.

He also likes nap time. (so do I!)

Jackie spoiled him and bought him an Old Navy outfit. He is much more stylish than his parents.

Bye Grandma… See you next week!

We went to see the pediatric respirologist and respiratory therapist this morning. He did great off of the oxygen while he was awake, but his numbers went down a bit when he was sleeping really deeply. The numbers never went very low, but the respirologist would still like him on the oxygen when he is in a deep sleep (at night and with big naps during the day). We are happy to have this little bit of freedom. He will be four weeks old on Thursday and today is the first day that I’ve held him without any lines or tubes attached. The plan is that we are to go see the respiratory therapist in two weeks and get hooked back up to the monitor for about an hour while he is sleeping and they will hopefully completely leave him off the oxygen then.
Here are pictures of the car seat cover that Auntie Monica made for him yesterday. It was nice to have for our outing this morning.

Today was the first Sunday that the three of us got to go to church together. We took this picture in front of the bug wall that Stephen painted. I’ll post more bug wall picutres later. Josiah is still doing really well. He has been sleeping about 4 hours at a time during the night and his breathing seems to be a bit better. We’ll see what the doctor has to say about the oxygen on Tuesday.

We survived a few firsts this week including sleeping, bath time and car rides. The small oxygen tank makes us somewhat portable. He is so cute! We are having lots of fun having him at home.

Since this is much faster than a thank you card everyone gets to see the afghan and giraffe from Robin. She moved to Korea during the summer to teach English and made this blanket for Josiah before she left. Diane delivered it to the hospital which was nice because Robert was cold.

We named the giraffe Horatio after the guy on CSI Miami who answers everyone’s questions with his head tilted to the side.

We had a very exciting day because we are all at home! Josiah was discharged from the hospital this afternoon on oxygen and finally got come home with us! It has been a long couple of weeks so we are very happy to not have so many trips to the hospital. Yesterday they wanted us to stay at the hospital tonight to make sure that we were comfortable with the home oxygen equipment, but today they decided that we looked comfortable and that he is stable enough to be at home. We will go see our family doctor in a couple days and then we have a follow-up appointment with the pediatric respirologist in a week to see if he can come off of the oxygen. We had visits today from Grandpa and Grandma Orr, Jackie, Diane, Roy, Monica, and Linaya and we finally got to take “cousins pictures”.

Today was specialist day for Josiah. When we went to the hospital to feed him the nurse told us that the only thing new from rounds was that the doctor heard a heart murmur. I wasn’t too concerned because he has listened for a murmur before and never heard one. We didn’t have to worry for long because ten minutes later the cardiologist came in with the ultrasound machine to look at his heart. He found no heart murmurs, defects, valve problems or anything like that. He said that the heart looks healthy and that the heart is not the cause of Josiah still needing oxygen. While the cardiologist was charting the pediatric respirologist came into the room. He had looked at the chest x-rays, listened to Josiah’s chest, and watched him breathing. He completely agreed with the NICU doctor that he just has an inflammation in his lungs from inhaling the meconium and it needs time to resolve on its own. He also agreed with the NICU doctor that there should be no long term problems with his lungs once this initial inflammation resolves and that things are “headed in the right direction”. The NICU doctor came to talk to us next and suggested that we could take Josiah home on oxygen and just bring him back in to be checked out about once a week. We feel comfortable with that because of my job experience and Josiah has been so stable on the same small amount of oxygen for the last week. The plan is that the nurse will try to get the equipment in place by tomorrow and Robert and I would stay at the hospital tomorrow night with him (they have a room for the parents to stay with the baby the night before discharge). So unless something else happens we should be able to bring Josiah home on Wednesday (or Thursday if equipment is hard to find). Keep praying that this will all go smoothly! We are very excited by the idea of giving up our hospital routine! Thanks to everyone for the comments and encouragement.

Josiah is still doing about the same today. He is a little better than he was a week ago, but he has the NICU doctor a bit puzzled about what is taking him so long to get off of the oxygen. He still thinks that Josiah just needs a little more time for the inflammation to resolve on its own, but just to be sure he ordered another chest x-ray, blood gases, and the pediatric respirologist is going to see Josiah on Monday. He is still slowly improving, but it is nice that they are being very careful not to miss anything. Today they took off Josiah’s chest leads that monitor his heart because they have never picked up any problems there. It is nice to have a couple less wires to get him tangled up in.
